Troubles Change Direction
(Hungrytown)
© 2005 Rebecca Hall.
Like "Every Day," this was a song that I wrote when I was down, and it made me feel better when it was done. I kind of view Hungrytown as a tribute to my favorite songwriters. I love the dreamlike imagery in many of Townes Van Zandt's songs, which is what I had in mind when writing this one.
I've had many theories as to what this song is about, but nothing really seems to stick. It's very internal, and all efforts to describe it somehow can't help sounding pretentious. RH
Flying close beneath the clouds
But still too high for weeping
I'll run the birds down to the ground
For the secrets they are keeping.
Damnation stands and holds his ground
He's much too sure to falter.
But I've got a memory, upside-down
And it's swift and clear as water.
Rain falls up, smoke blows down
When troubles change direction.
While rivers flowing underground
All roll away to heaven.
